INTERVIEW WITH KEITH BLOODWORTH, CEO OF CNL SOFTWARE: PREDICTIONS FOR 2013
2012 has been a great year for the global security industry. This is especially true for many PSIM vendors who have seen their busiest year to date. We catch up with Keith Bloodworth, CEO of CNL Software, one of the world's leading PSIM developers to discuss some of the trends that helped shape the PSIM market this year and to get some forecasts for the direction it will head in 2013. It provided an opportunity to get some no nonsense, real world answers in light of some exaggerated claims regarding PSIM this year.
Question - Hi Keith, as 2012 closes, what would you say were your observations about the PSIM market this year?
Keith - One of the key highlights for me was seeing the maturity of the PSIM market first hand. As I stood on the show floor at ASIS in Philadelphia, the questions from end users and channel had moved on from "what does the technology do?" to "how are you different to other PSIM vendors?" There has been a major shift towards a second generation of PSIM channel partners and end users, those who started their PSIM journey several years ago and are now looking for the next step up. The result is that a number of very IT savvy channel switched over to CNL Software during 2012, largely due to the need for a product capable of real scale, configuration flexibility and the ability to process complex business processes.
2012 saw a significant step forward for our own PSIM technology. For example IPSecurityCenter played a pivotal role in the largest and most complex security aggregation project during the London Olympics plus we launched IPSCDevNet; the first ever PSIM focused development community. We have also seen real growth for PSIM in some key markets such as mass transit, healthcare, homeland defense, safe city and ports, all of which have brought new opportunities and successes for IPSecurityCenter this year.
Question - So outside of CNL Software projects have you seen any other evidence of the maturity of the PSIM market in 2012?
Keith - Yes we certainly have and it relates directly back to the PSIM capable channel. It was good to see this backed up by Jeff Kessler from Imperial Capital in his latest Security Industry Monitor report. He points to IT proficient integrators gaining market share along with highly focused small/medium integrators with what he is calling IT IQ "Information Technology Intelligence Quotient". PSIM is a major driver in this changing landscape as companies are taking real business and risk related issues to the integrators rather than installation and maintenance issues. The market needs these companies to make a profitable business out of deploying PSIM, and it is reassuring to see that someone like Jeff has recognized that it is now driving their bottom line.
We have also seen the emergence of new PSIM entrants in 2012. Three years ago if you walked the trade-show floor at ASIS or ISC West you would have found a handful of PSIM players, CNL, Proximex, Vidsys, Nice/Orsus. Today there are in excess of 20 PSIM product suppliers and this year saw the largest surge of new PSIM companies enter the market. On top of this, we have also seen investment in PSIM coming from "multibillion dollar" IT centric companies like Microsoft, Cisco and EMC who, together with the likes of Tyco and BAE, have all placed financial investment in to PSIM companies.
Question - So those were the key highlights of 2012, what about your forecasts for 2013?
Keith - This will be the year that PSIM goes mainstream. What we are seeing is an ever-increasing number of RFP's specifying PSIM as the key solution to major projects. Many of these RFP's are looking for technology solutions that can only be achieved by Enterprise level PSIM or expensive bespoke solutions. We have seen a marked increase in the ambition, scale and complexity of new integration projects, ones which cannot be achieved by the majority of the entry level PSIM vendors, particularly those based on VMS or ACS sub-systems. These companies are great at integrating devices or alarm management, but many fall short when it comes down to complex operations or dynamic actions based on data inputs received from 3rd party applications or sub-systems.
PSIM Segmentation - My main prediction for 2013 is the separation of PSIM vendors in to classic market segments. At the high end those whose solutions truly scale, like CNL's, will put major distance from those who rely on 3rd party products for High Availability/Disaster Recovery for example, or those who do not offer load balancing or need to turn off their solutions to do updates. Mission critical systems just have to be "Always On", which we believe to be a core component of an Enterprise PSIM solution moving forward.
Federation - Another prediction is Federation; the ability to connect multiple systems, at a large site or multiple security control rooms around the globe to create one holistic "Shield", will be particularly important for large-scale global corporate operations. This type of solution will allow multiple sources of alarm handling, remote management and the connection of operations to reduce cost, improve efficiency and bring greater visibility to the entire operation. It is important that federated systems are not just seen as failover solutions, but as systems that are able to hand off operations to another center whenever needed. Using a federated system to create a "follow the sun" solution might mean that a control center in India could monitor UK operations overnight; reducing the need for night staff in attendance on site, unless there was an event that required it. It also allows global management of widespread security risks and disasters.
Collaborative partnerships - We expect the emergence of IT Integrators in to the physical security space, mainly being responsible for the deployment of large scale, complex PSIM projects, but working together with security SI's who do not currently have the required skills in house. These "collaborative" partnerships have been around in IT for a long time, but they are now winning deals in the PSIM space. Within these partnerships, they are also likely to write their own drivers for sub-systems or data connections, using development tools like our Driver Development Kit. We predict that even manufacturers will start producing drivers in order to connect to PSIM systems, although a number of the larger ones are implementing PSIA interoperability, allowing PSIM to connect using a standard driver.
Greater deployment of PSIM intelligence - 2013 will see end users giving greater focus to what they can do better with the knowledge they already have. We are excited about the way large-scale transportation projects are now looking to PSIM vendors to provide the "smarts" in and out of the control room. We are working on tasks like "follow that train", using core destination data to automate camera views from station to station. This is equally true in ports or airports, where arrival data can trigger standard operating procedure, taking the responsibility away from the operator by pushing the intelligence into the system. Managing multiple analytics solutions will be a de facto standard and rules based workflow will be required.
The market will recognize the ROI of advanced video export; a one click solution to gather all video related to an incident, which removes the need for the operator to reach into each of the native video recording systems. This feature coupled with video analytics enables intelligent searches around defined parameters, further reducing evidence collection times. When clients have 50,000+ cameras in a single connected system, live viewing can only be an option if triggered by an event; in the future most investigations will be run by automated process outside the control room.
In 2013 we see more customers requiring this level of intelligence, which ensures faster processing of evidence, essential for large-scale applications as they rely less on live views and more on forensics. In this way, they get the evidential data faster, cheaper, more reliably and from a greater number of sources. PSIM is really coming of age, reducing operating costs, speeding up evidence management, improving emergency preparedness and managing increasingly complex, mission critical security environments.

Following its initial launch in the summer of 2012 to a select number of partners, the IPSCDevNet program has facilitated the secure and independent creation of integrations for IPSecurityCenter applications. This open approach has now been extended to further partners in the CNL Software ecosystem, as well as other independent software developers. The IPSCDevNet program provides members with a wide range of benefits, including revenue generation opportunities, such as contracted work from CNL Software and the ability to resell drivers using the IPSCDevNet portal.
Registered IPSCDevNet program partners receive access to all the tools needed to create certified integration drivers to the IPSecurityCenter™ PSIM platform. IPSCDevNet is aimed at four distinct member groups: API partners, who will be contracted by CNL Software to create drivers. CNL Software channel partners, who want to write and own specialized drivers for specific customers. CNL Software technology partners who want to write and own their own drivers, as it will help them get a share of the large PSIM and enterprise markets. The final group is independent software developers, who want to generate revenue from reselling IPSecurityCenter drivers on a customer by customer basis.

IPSECURITYCENTER™ PSIM SOLUTION CHOSEN FOR WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FERRIES DIVISION

The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division (WSF) is the largest ferry system in the nation and fourth largest in the world. Over 22 million customers annually rely on WSF's 22 vessels and 20 ferry terminals for safe, reliable transportation across Puget Sound. WSF provides two vital transportation functions: as a marine highway and as a transit service provider and is an essential part of the highway network of Western Washington. It serves as the only public transportation link to the mainland for Vashon Island and the San Juan Islands, and it is the second largest transit system in Washington State.
G4S Technology will install a new Milestone XProtect® Corporate Video Management system (VMS). IPSecurityCenter from CNL Software will be utilized as the Physical Security Information Management System (PSIM) to integrate various security components into one interoperable Command and Control System (CCS) with a common user interface. Updates also include a new AMAG Access Control System (ACS) that will bring the Ferries Division into Transportation Workers Information Clearance (TWIC) compliance. The work is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

GLOBAL RELEASE - September 18, 2012 - CNL Software, a world leader in Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software, is pleased to announce the deployment of an Arabic language version of its IPSecurityCenter™ PSIM solution as part of a localization project supporting customers in the Middle East.
IPSecurityCenter provides a single Common Operating Platform (COP) for all of an organization's mission critical security systems across operators with varying roles and permission levels. Using a natural right-to-left reading format, the Arabic version offers a localized administrator interface for managing users, groups and device status. Layouts, sequences and process guidance can also all be created in Arabic. Operators will be able to work using Arabic to view alarms, search for cameras and locations as well as display maps, gauges, charts and address details.

GLOBAL RELEASE - August 9, 2012 - CNL Software, a world leader in Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software, is pleased to announce the expansion of one of its IPSecurityCenter™ PSIM deployments to protect staff, visitors, buildings and assets in over 425 office locations across six countries located in the Americas, Europe and the Indian subcontinent. The solution incorporates the largest and most complex PSIM deployment in the US today.
As with many Fortune 20 companies, the organization has grown both organically and through M&A activity, which has meant that the physical security infrastructure has expanded rapidly; bringing on board disparate security systems, multiple command and control centers plus numerous procedures and processes.
Each of the organization's subsidiaries in the six countries had the autonomy to choose the best solution for their own local security needs. A key requirement for the US division was to reduce the number of Command and Control Centers it was running by 90% across its 375+ locations in North America. The new date, August the 20th to the 23rd 2012, has been added due to overwhelming interest in the training, which highlights the use and application of IPSecurityCenter for delivery of a platform to connect, correlate, verify, visualize and manage the wide range of disparate technologies found in the Security and BMS industries today.
This focused training event is part of CNL Software's Channel Alliance Program (CAP) certification. Attendees will be taken through five core modules of the training; IPSecurityCenter Fundamentals, Building Functional Units, Complete Solution Concepts, Advanced Device Integration and Maintenance and Support. Upon successful completion, attendees are awarded with certificates of completion, manuals and demonstration software.

The joint projects will utilize the IPSecurityCenter™ PSIM platform to integrate with other security products and systems, providing comprehensive situation management for metal ore mining and petrochemical customers.
Security professionals with responsibility for protecting oil and gas extraction sites, coal mines and metal ore mines face the risk of violent attacks as well as natural disasters, which they need to manage in order to minimize risks to the security, health and safety of personnel. GLOBAL RELEASE - March 1, 2012 - CNL Software, a world leader in Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software, partners with CIBER, Inc. to provide the Atlanta Police Department with an integrated suite of emergency dispatch applications that allow call takers and dispatchers to manage incident information more efficiently.
Ensuring the safety and security of citizens and visitors is key to the success and progress of any city. This is especially true for Atlanta. The City covers 8,376 square miles, is home to over 5 Million in the Metropolitan area, hosts over 35 Million visitors per year and is protected by 1,639 police officers.
Over the years Atlanta has become more reliant on the use of visual intelligence to help identify and resolve safety and security incidents faster and more precisely. The City had invested in a number of surveillance systems to provide law enforcement and security professionals with visual intelligence through the eye of a camera, well before first responders had arrived.
The next step for the City is to expand and leverage the fully functioning Video Integration Center (VIC) powered by IPSC to bring together disparate, legacy video systems and additionally, to utilize the large number of private cameras located in the City, from sources ranging from the Publix supermarket in Buckhead to the Georgia State University.

With over 400,000 residents, the city plans to integrate several hundred current city cameras from both the public and private sectors in the initial phase, reaching upward of 3,000 cameras when the project is completed. The project will include video, real time alert management and radio communications that will allow local businesses to talk directly with the Police Department's 911 call center. The aggregation of this intelligence will increase situational awareness and the overall safety of the near half a million citizens who live and work in this metropolitan area.
By connecting, verifying and aggregating data from the city's multiple systems, as well as the data from private organizations and collaborating agencies, the IPSecurityCenter™ PSIM deployment will enable the city to distribute intelligence to the point of need in real time for enhanced situation management. Future plans for the project include the integration of other government agencies including transportation, water treatment facilities and school systems.

The integration program creates a unified and central interface where situational awareness and monitoring requirements of multiple agencies within the District of Columbia can be managed and processed. Over 5,000 CCTV cameras are operating by multiple District agencies. Over the years, each agency has developed its own video control solution to fit its own requirements, with different applications, manufacturers, and control centers. The capability to share video data is critical during extraneous circumstances that require situational awareness above and beyond that of daily operations. Bringing together these various and separate resources onto one platform will ultimately improve emergency preparedness and response.
Following a successful commissioning of the initial phase of the DC Situation Awareness program, the expansion order will add additional agencies to the program and well over 2,000+ CCTV cameras bringing the total to 7,000+ cameras operated by multiple agencies.

The project consists of multiple ports in the region where container growth and capacity are expected to nearly double from a current 3.5 million containers to 6.5 million containers by 2018.

It allows operators to select evidence by selecting cameras from a map, cameras related to an incident, from a list of favourites or by searching for a camera. Once a list of cameras have been specified the operator can select the desired location for the exported video and IPSecurityCenter will then automatically schedule, create and advise when the files are ready.
One IPSecurityCenter user centralises video from over 3000 locations allowing video to be exported from over 10,000 cameras. Prior to this, the organisation was exporting locally and reliant on operatives to transport this evidence, which was time consuming and expensive. This time saving is critical for evidence review when resolving incidents.
Alarm Types - Provide easy management of alarm process configuration. This allows rapid deployment of solutions as alarm configurations can be done through an intuitive wizard based user interface. It also makes it easier to pull in alarms from new systems when extending existing deployments.
Tile Layouts - Provide out of the box access to a wide range of video salvos. Salvos can be created, saved and recalled at any time and are governed by IPSecurityCenter's advanced permission system. A tile layout can contain a mixture of cameras from any supported video system, allowing the operator to access all visual intelligence needed to manage the situation.
Sequences - Provide built-in support for video patrols. A sequence can include cameras from any supported video management system and can recall saved preset positions.
Reporting Interface - Allows report generation from IPSecurityCenter data using standard enterprise business intelligence tools such as Crystal Reports, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services and others.
Dashboard - Includes out of the box pre-configured KPI dashboards and expands the user interface dashboard controls.

The expanded partnership will increase the interaction between CNL's award winning IPSecurityCenter™ (IPSC) and PPM 2000's Perspective Incident Management software.
In addition to the current link between IPSC and Perspective, IPSC users will now be able to interact with Perspective's Computer-Aided Dispatching and Officer Management module, DispatchLog. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan Analysis of the Worldwide Physical Security Information Management Market, finds that the world market for PSIM software earned revenues of $80 million in 2009 and estimates this to reach $544 million in 2015, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 37.6 percent.
"While PSIM is seeing a higher degree of customisation, coupled with increased connectivity, many market participants believe that PSIM functionality can or should be created with off-the-shelf software and not by customisation options," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Manager Matia Grossi. "It is anticipated that while the standardisation process gains momentum, the need to provide customised solutions will remain dominant in the market."
Software development and processor power have accelerated the adoption of PSIM. Today, the majority of the deployments is made mainly at maritime and airports, with critical infrastructure, homeland security and law enforcement applications. Declining costs and greater sophistication are boosting the adoption of PSIM. The advanced use of wizards and plug-and-play technology makes PSIM solutions viable for large- and medium-sized organisations. As a result, PSIM has extended its boundaries from being limited to critical infrastructure protection and homeland security to the larger corporate market.
The migration of physical security technologies from analogue to IP is enabling easier communication, further fuelling the increased usage of PSIM. At the same time, the increasing recognition of its benefits among both security-critical sectors and non-security-critical ones is also boosting the prospects of PSIM.
"Heightened competition is leading to a fall in price. Inevitably, more competitors means that this technology is becoming more accessible to a wider range of customers," adds Grossi. "CNL, VidSys, Proximex, and NICE with the acquisition of Orsus, are the clear market leaders at the moment and have a real stronghold in the market; these companies are driving PSIM adoption and acceptance."
Ensuring interoperability across different vendors' devices/systems remains a challenge for the market. The physical security market as a whole lacks common, open standards. Thus, virtually, any deployment requires the development of new drivers to integrate various systems. "However, the first steps towards increasing standardization are currently being made in the market from organizations such as ONVIF and PSIA," comments Grossi.
"The capability to intelligently analyse and cross-reference incoming data represents yet another challenge," states Grossi. "With some exceptions, PSIM systems, even today, still process individual alarms."
Despite these challenges, the outlook for the market is optimistic. As the traditional command centre solution providers have started accepting PSIM and end-users are demanding it, PSIM is emerging as a rapidly growing technology category promising increased year-on-year revenues.
